Writers at Home

Hello again to all you young writers out there! This week's new writing challenge is called....

Picture This

I LOVE looking at pictures. I love looking at pictures of my family and friends. I love looking at pictures of holidays which bring back good memories. Whenever I visit a school I always look at the pictures on the walls - which sometimes give me ideas for stories or poems!

This week's writing challenge gives you complete freedom to

FIRE UP YOUR IMAGINATION!

You can choose to write either a poem, a description, all or part of a story ... or whatever else you wish!

So here we go!

Firstly, take a good, long look at the magical, mystical picture below.

  • Jot down any descriptive words or thoughts that come into your mind.

  • Who is the girl in the picture and where did she come from?

  • How and why did the girl get to this magical forest in the middle of the night?

  • Who else could live in this magical place? Strange creatures? Witches? Wizards?

  • What do you think could happen next?

Ready to Write

If you would like to write a story:

  • You could begin with a flashback. How did

the young girl know about the magical forest?

  • However, you may wish to start at the point

in the picture where the girl has arrived in

       the forest. What happens next?

If you would like to write a poem:

  • Use all the descriptive tricks you can to bring your poem to life: similes, metaphors, alliteration etc.

e.g. The trees have eyes of fire that shine

              like demons in the night.

Their roots stretch across the cold forest

              floor like giants' feet.

If you would like to write a description:

Maybe you could forget about the girl and imagine it is YOU in the forest. Use all of your different senses.

What do you see? What do you hear? What do you smell? How do you feel?

Once again, I would love to read your finished work. You could email it to me or send it via my Facebook page.
